They're the experts with our tax dollars, too. The experts on the economy. The experts on the effects of a "stimulus".

What this really demonstrates is that the only expertise the gov't possesses is tax collection and borrowing. Even when the gov't decides it is going to do something (like "stimulate" the economy with spending), it cannot even do *that* in a timely manner. But you can be certain that any recovery that occurs will be attributed to the stimulus, even though it's likely the stimulus has almost zero to do with any recovery. Had we done nothing, the economy would still have recovered.

What will remain forever unspoken in DC is how fewer people would have been laid off and required unemployment assistance had the gov't simply cut the corporate tax rate, and cut the payroll tax, which acts as a penalty in hiring and retaining employees. Nary a peep from DC on doing something like that, because apparently the business of the federal gov't is not to create an environment where economic liberty can be achieved; rather, it is an environment where choice is taken away from its citizens through taxation and economy-destroying fiscal policies.

Quotes

  • Only a crisis—actual or perceived— produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes politically inevitable .... (Milton Friedman)
