David is 'right on the money.' We absolutely must change direction. Legislative leadership ignores this issue at its peril.

I expect them to stand tall on and recognize this is not a political, but a fiscal concern. If ever an issue deserved the full cooperation of the Governor and the "Shap/Shum" coalition, this is it.

Are they up for fixing it?

Tom Licata

When will it occur to our legislature that we (our nation, our state, our municipalities) may not have a liquidity problem (the means to convert to cash; debt paying ability) whose solution can be found in higher taxes but, that we have an insolvency problem (the inability to pay one's debts)?

If the problem is the latter, which I believe is the case, the answer is to redefine our standard of living; cut expenses; reform major programs (education); and promote pro-growth economic policies to build an economy that matches the standard of living we desire.

Economic development is the price we pay for a civil society.

Dennis Lukas

With all due respect for Mr.Norman, you are not going to reverse this course, look at the UAW and GM, the unions are not in the equation to fix this, and neither is the legislature who are focused on Vermont Yankee, Gay Marriage, etc.
Every one is in denial of the facts, people have lost 50% of their wealth, the federal government is spending the other 50%. As the so-called rich in Vermont lose their wealth Vermont receives less tax revenue, as costs in Vermont increase more people flock to shop in tax free New Hampshire. People that have families leave for other states that have less taxes and jobs.
Oh business increase in the good years? You could turn this all around, but not with the elected leaders you have now. Those that think they will collect pensions and medical benefits in the future better know where the section eight and medicare offices are.All this was never sustainable in a anti business climate.Dreams of a Green Vermont have come true. The few working people that are left will leave when the state is forced every year to raise taxes.Waiting for Federal money that will not do anything to generate true revenue is another denial of reality. The last ten years were when we should have built a business plan instead of a anti-business plan.

GreggB

Vermonters of all political persuasions seem to have this notion that Vermont can catch up to the rest of the world whenever Vermont wants to. Fixing a few bridges, a little repaving, permit and tax reform, maybe a cell tower or two. None of it would help. Vermont will never, in most folks lifetimes, catch up to prosperous states. Vermont doesn't have and can't attract the human capital. Plus if all the anti-business rules were stricken tomorrow it would have little effect as the state agencies are loaded with anti-everything gatekeepers. Love the suck or leave.

Quotes

  • Only a crisis—actual or perceived— produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes politically inevitable ....
