Governor Takes On Education

Douglas I was delighted to see Governor Douglas take on the Educational establishment today in his inaugural address.   This is long overdue and I give him credit, as this will be a very difficult challenge.

I hope we can really look at fundamental changes in how education is delivered, and build in measurements to ensure effectiveness, and not just get bogged down in how (or who) pays for it.   Otherwise, if history repeats, all we will end up doing is adding more $ to feed the beast.   It seems like every 8 to 12 years we hit the wall and the response is to craft a new funding formula with new tax money to get the political support for the change.    Let's hope that this time we are successful in addressing fundamental education reform as well as the distribution of the funds.

Quotes

  • Only a crisis—actual or perceived— produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes politically inevitable .... (Milton Friedman)
