In yet another example of the state's revenue shortfalls affecting basic services, the third branch of government will shut down to a limited extent in the coming months in order to save money. Unfortunately, the clerks are really the backbone of the administration of these offices, and these positions aren't the highest-paying positions around, so these actions can't be helpful to morale.
Red lights have been flashing in this state for some time, in terms of its economy. A near zero job growth rate, with its subsequent declining tax revenues and reductions in services provided (like the courts), should alarm Vermonters on both sides of the political coin. Yet we continue to see very little of consequence from our elected officials.
Will the last person to leave Vermont please shut off the lights? Assuming, of course, that we still have power?
