Vermont-NEA's Darren Allen assured me that the audience wouldn't be "stacked and packed" with Vermont-NEA supporters at the gubernatorial debate they sponsored Wednesday. He made no such claims about the audience questions, however. The questions were big ol' softballs served up for Gaye Symington to hit out of the park. The first one had health care being the main education cost-driver as its premise, and the questioner demanded to know what the candidates would do about it. The whole debate went far afield from the promised topic of education.
Well, Gaye couldn't even hit the softballs. Her responses were, in the words of even a Green Mountain Daily blogger, "halting." I actually agree with GMD that Pollina had an effective showing. Douglas held his own. But Pollina scored big points. Vermont-NEA, no doubt, was disappointed in Gaye's performance.
