So here is the way "the system" works in Vermont: your town increases spending for schools this year by a modest 2% and, therefore your property taxes – which are supposed to finance education – go up by 8%. And this occurs during bad economic times which any old student of J.M. Keynes will tell you, is the wrong way to go.
So ... if, on your way into the Post Office, someone stops you and asks for your support in the coming election, ask politely:
a) Is this a good system and worth preserving?
and
b) If not, what do you propose to do about it?
