Man In The Ring

Tom Licata, who has had a lot to say about the state of Vermont's economy (some of it on this site), announced on the Charlie and Ernie show, this morning, that he will be a candidate for the Vermont Senate where he hopes to translate ideas into action.  In an e-mail to us, he made the following campaign promise:

I will not run to win.  I will run on what I believe is necessary to move Vermont forward.  I will tell Vermonters not what they may want to hear, but what they need to hear.  I may get my ass-kicked – but I will guarantee you one thing – I will walk away with my head held high.

That kind of shameless pandering gets our vote.  Every time.

I certainly agree with Mr. Licata. Vermont is strangling in a cesspool of regulations and stupidity that disallows innovation. The prosperity of the past is being purloined by the robber barons that have been in charge under the golden dome this last biennium. I would like to restore common sense to the law.

Tom has done his homework and will hold his own with any opponent in a debate on the economic issues facing Vermont. He'll argue from facts, figures and reality, not a baseless notion of 'what's good for us' often heard from under the golden dome.

While he's a newcomer to politics, he's smart, genuine and sincere. He has no ax to grind except to sharpen the Legislature's approach to enabling sensible economic growth rather than stunting it as often happens when ideology rather than pragmatism rules.

Congrats and best wishes to Tom Licata who could finally bring some common sense to the Chit County Senate delegation. His run should inspire reluctant Republicans all over Vermont that now is the time to get back in the game. He should receive the all out support of the VT Republican Party as a prelude to a Tarrant For Gov run in '10, and a return to the legislative majority in the '12 election cycle.

Quotes

  • Only a crisis—actual or perceived— produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes politically inevitable .... (Milton Friedman)
