Maybe it’s this topsy-turvy emotional atmosphere, but I’ve got a perverse secret to confess: I’m kind of looking forward to the recession.
Judith Levine, Seven Days
The case -- well and elegantly argued -- for sustainability. Read the whole essay and learn why it is good for you – and for Vermont – that people should lose their jobs as roofers or electricians and then lose their homes. For one thing, they won't be able to afford potato chips and this will ease the obesity crisis.

Scary that her audience probably agrees with her. Funny she failed to mention that back in the glory days, when VT was affordably poor, the taxes were low.
This from the article points to VT's problem: 'knowing you can live happily working less, earning less, and smoking more pot.'
OK I added the last part, but I do wish these people would let those in VT who want to prosper, do so. You can still work less and earn less while other people are making money. No need mandating poverty for everyone.

Perhaps Miss Levine would cease romanticizing the "simple life" if forced to give up one of her multiple residences. She admits being pleased when growth is denied to the benefit of Vermonters, but yet capitalizes, herself,on the offerings of the highly developed, modern metropolis--New York City. She obviously does not dress in a mirror. Sad, but rather predictable behavior.
At least, however, she is honest and eloquent in her selfishness. I wonder if she feels the least bit conflicted, though, that she needed an economic downturn to teach her about happiness. Or maybe she is just pontificating for the sake of the unwashed masses. If it was truly sustainability that she sought-- for some supposed universal good--she might consider just occupying one residence. Methinks if forced to do this, however, she might not be so happy and the old days might not be so romantic any longer.
Sincerely,
James Ehlers
