Before we proclaim nuclear power as the solution to our energy problems, let's remember that the waste disposal issue remains far from solved. Check out the following link to Sunday's New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/17/us/17nuke.html?th&emc=th

Stupid is as stupid does. We have an irrational national policy regarding waste disposal from nuclear facilities. We have this multi-billion dollar boondoggle at Yucca Mountain Nevada which seems likely never to open. Meanwhile, France produces 70+% of its electricity from nuclear reactors and reprocesses most of the waste fuel.
Certainly there is low-level radioactive waste to be disposed of, but reprocessing the spent fuel, the concern of most environmentalists, seems the path to take.
The sad reality is that anti-nuclear environmental forces are behind most of the delays and lawsuits at Yucca Mountain. No one has proposed a solution to their roadblocks. Why can't we reprocess fuel in some of our federal nuclear facilities?
Meanwhile, plan B for Yucca Mountain could be to create a tourist destination for visitors to Las Vegas, as Lake Mead dries up. It's probable nice and cool in that mountain!
I am embarrassed for our country when this sort of mess is allowed to fester.
