Milton Friedman is just about a household name, but fewer people are familiar with the late economist Julian Simon. Simon's books, including The Ultimate Resource and The State of Humanity, provide a welcome counter to the doomsayers who fear for the future of humanity and for the planet. He is also well known for his famous bet with environmentalist and population biologist Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb.
Friday night, January 4 at 10pm, Vermont Public Television is showing Ultimate Resource:
In the last 25 years, millions of people - 400 million in China alone - have climbed out of extreme poverty of living on less than $1.00 per day. It is the largest movement out of poverty human history. Based on the economic and philosophic principles of Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman and economist Julian Simon, The Ultimate Resource profiles individuals and families whose entrepreneurial spirits have flourished within free, competitive economies. The program also documents some of the surprising and innovative free market and free trade initiatives improving lives in Ghana, Estonia, China, Peru and Bangladesh. The film includes commentary from the field's most innovative thinkers, including economist Hernando de Soto, author Dr. James Tooley, scholar Johan Norberg and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
