Catmount Health hasn't even opened its doors for business and is already looking for some $18.5 million to subsidize health insurance for people earning between $41,000 and $50,000 a year. Federal funds will subsidize those with incomes below $41,000. Those above $50,000 are on their own.
Perhaps a better policy would be for the state to give these folks a tax break so they can spend some of the extra cash on health insurance. Although, I wouldn't bet on them doing it. According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services over 27% of the uninsured earn more than $50,000 a year. Furthermore, those in the fastest-growing income segment of the uninsured make more than $75,000 a year.
