Scores for 2005 show that in eighth-grade math, about 38 percent of Vermont students were proficient on the NAEP test while 60 percent passed Vermont's New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) -- a 22-point gap. In fourth-grade reading, 39 percent of Vermont students passed the NAEP test and 69 percent passed the NECAP, a 30-point gap.
This story in the Freeps, along with this one, should give anyone reason to ponder just how well our very pricey education system is really performing.
